… Your eyes.
Here’s something strange. Right now, each of your eyes has a blind spot.
It’s where your optic nerve leaves the eye, and there are no light receptors there at all. You’ve never noticed it because your brain fills in the gap.
That same trick is why glaucoma is so dangerous.
About 4.2 million American adults have glaucoma. Nearly half of them don’t know it.
It takes your side vision first, so slowly and painlessly that your brain covers up the damage, and you can lose a large share of your vision before anything seems wrong.
The damage can’t be undone! 43% of people with glaucoma say they’ve never had a dilated eye exam, which is the single best way to catch it.
Today, I walk you through the six parts of the eye worth knowing by name.
I explain why your retina isn’t like brain tissue. It is brain tissue. And I show you how your eyes run your body clock through a third type of light receptor most men have never heard of.
We also cover the 20-20-20 habit for screen strain, the eye drops you should stop using, why an eye exam doubles as a check on your heart and blood sugar, the eye exam schedule for your age, and the foods that build protective pigment in your eyes.
If you’ve been treating your eye health as an afterthought, this episode closes that blind spot for good.

Key Takeaways
- Glaucoma is called “the silent thief of sight.” About 4.2 million American adults have it, nearly half don’t know, and the damage can’t be reversed. Your brain fills in the missing side vision, so you won’t notice until it’s advanced.
- Your retina is brain tissue. It grows out of the brain before birth. Protecting your eye health means protecting an exposed piece of your nervous system, and those cells don’t grow back.
- Your eyes also run your body clock. Special light receptors containing a pigment called melanopsin respond most to blue daytime light. They tell your brain’s master clock what time it is, which shapes serotonin, melatonin, sleep and immune function.
- Get 10–20 minutes of morning light outdoors. It does more for your body clock than any supplement, and even a cloudy day gives you far more light than a bright indoor room. At night, dim your home and switch to warmer, orange-toned bulbs.
- Use the 20-20-20 habit at screens. Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds, and blink on purpose. Screens cut your blink rate, dry out your eyes and lock your lens in one position. That gets harder after 40 as the lens stiffens (presbyopia).
- Skip the “get the red out” drops. They work by narrowing blood vessels, which leads to rebound redness and less blood flow to the eye. Warm compresses, preservative-free artificial tears and antihistamine drops (if you have allergies) are better choices.
- An eye exam is also a heart and metabolism check. The back of your eye is the only place a doctor can see your blood vessels and nerve tissue directly. High blood sugar, high blood pressure and cholesterol plaques can all show up there.
- Diabetic retinopathy affects about 1 in 3 people with diabetes. It causes no symptoms early on, and the damage is permanent. If you have diabetes, get a dilated eye exam every year.
- Follow the American Academy of Ophthalmology exam schedule. Under 40: every 5–10 years. Ages 40–54: every 2–4 years. Ages 55–64: every 1–3 years. 65 and up: every 1–2 years. If you’re over 40 and have never had a baseline exam, book one.
- Lutein and zeaxanthin feed your eyes. These protective pigments build up in the macula. You get them from dark leafy greens (spinach, kale, collards, chard), egg yolks, peppers, squash, broccoli, peas and pistachios, all of which fit a Mediterranean-style plate.

You can fill your plate with spinach, egg yolks and peppers. But your gut decides how much of that nutrition actually gets put to work.
As I said in this episode’s ad read, your gut is the control center for much of your biology: digestion, immune strength, inflammation and even brain health.
Most probiotics don’t survive your stomach acid. They’re dead on arrival.
Just Thrive is one of the few probiotics I trust, because the science behind spore survival is real, not just marketing. Its four clinically studied spore-based strains get through stomach acid alive, with 1,000x better survival.
