overcoming diabetes

Think overcoming diabetes is impossible? Don't think you can overcome and reverse life-threatening complications?

Then you have to meet Fit Father Ron!

Ron is a 53-year-old father of four.

A few years ago, Ron found himself in his doctor's office in bad shape, on the verge of full-blown diabetes, with diabetic retinopathy and blood so thick with triglycerides that he was near life-threatening complications.

He was quickly put on various diabetic and cholesterol medications, and his doctors wanted him to consider gastric bypass surgery and taking insulin.

Ron didn’t want to go that route.

He was working with a registered dietician, and, using his perspective as a mechanic, he knew what was broken.

Now, he just had to fix it.

Listen to Ron's Story on the Fit Father Project Podcast:

A Health Low Point

At his lowest, Ron was overweight, riddled with health problems, and had a poor relationship with food.

“I was severely overweight. I was in size 48 waist pants, and my food habits were quite bad. Too much alcohol, too much food, the wrong kinds of foods, and just excessive amounts of carbohydrates. The list was long.”

Then, Ron reached his tipping point.

“I exhibited the classic signs of Type II Diabetes, and it also affected my eyesight. Every month I was getting another magnification higher. My feet started feeling weird, and some strange neuropathy was happening there. So I went to my doctor's office in this bad shape. I discovered that I was on the verge of full-blown diabetes, with diabetic retinopathy and blood so thick with triglycerides that I was near life-threatening complications.”

While his health was on the verge of collapsing, he was also dealing with low self-esteem regarding his stature.

“I'm vertically challenged. I'm only 5'5 with broad shoulders and a stocky build. I would make jokes about it because that was how I was dealing with the negative feelings inside of me, and I was too embarrassed to go to a gym.”

Unfortunately, Ron's poor health conditions didn't stop at bad food habits and diabetes.

“My sugar was 378. My A1C was 14.6. My triglycerides were 3,000. My blood was a jelly-like consistency, and cholesterol was through the roof. That turned into being given a cocktail of diabetic and cholesterol medications, and so on. I was due for gastric bypass surgery.”

Overcoming Diabetes — And More!

Such serious medical conditions became a wake-up call for Ron.

So he decided to do something to fix it.

Ron started with a low-carb diet, prescribed medications, and regular walks.

He lost some weight, but he began questioning the sustainability of the regime.

He started looking for a fitness program for men in their 40s and found the Fit Father Project.

As Ron went along the program, he saw many improvements in his health.

“I was losing weight. My blood sugar was coming down. My A1C was starting to stabilize. My feet didn't hurt as much.”

But, Ron wanted to wage war on diabetes.

Part of his mission statement was to become medicine-free and get his A1C down.

He also wanted to be healthy for his family.

Before you knew it, Ron lost over 100 pounds!

He was feeling fit and running half-marathons, something he could not think of doing before.

“My kids are proud of me; I needed that a lot. I have lost about 130 pounds. My self-esteem back when I was out of shape was in a tank. I was not taking care of myself. But now I am doing some things I didn't think were achievable.”

So what would Ron say to someone looking to join the Fit Father Project?

“I wanted to lead my family from the front, and I was not doing that. I was not setting an example. I was not taking care of myself to be in front of them. So in order to make that mind shift, I believe I personally needed that wake-up call to say, wait, time out, you’ve got to change this now. So that fear factor helped me make that shift to health and fitness.”

3 Key Takeaways From Ron's Journey

To summarize, here are three key lessons you can learn from Ron’s successful health and fitness journey:

Lesson 1: Change Begins With You

In order to look after your family, be there for your community, or change the world, you have to take care of yourself first.

If you are in bad shape, you won't be able to show up for anyone else.

By looking after yourself, you can offer the best version of yourself to the world.

Think of the famous quote, “Be the change you wish to see in the world.”

Lesson 2: Nothing Is Impossible

Losing 130 pounds and defeating life-threatening health conditions might sound impossible.

But Ron's story proves the contrary!

Even though he was due for an urgent gastric bypass surgery, he ditched it all to undertake a fitness journey that changed his life.

This clearly shows that nothing is impossible if you are willing to challenge yourself, no matter how difficult it appears.

Only the excuses we give ourselves pull us down from achieving our goals.

Lesson 3: Nutrition Is Key

Many people equate weight loss with grueling hours in the gym.

Ron lost 130 pounds by following the Fit Father Project at home.

Going to the gym does not assure weight loss, but proper nutrition combined with the right workouts does.

And remember, it's 80% nutrition, and 20% exercise.
